Winery Spotlights | Betz Family Winery

Taversham’s Spring Auction | Betz Family Winery

We’d like to take a few moments to highlight Betz Family Winery, from Washington State, USA in the upcoming auction.

This auction sees 25 cases of wines from across the 2011, 2012 and 2013 vintages. The last few vintages before Bob fully handed over wine-making to the new owners. Current owners, the Griessel Family, took over in 2011, and Bob stayed on as winemaker until 2016.

Bob Betz has enjoyed a magical career that began in the 1970s. He and Cathy criss-crossed European vineyards to better understand how to craft fine wine. In October 1975 they returned to the US and Bob was hired by Chateau Ste. Michelle. Bob went on to spend 28 years at the pioneering Washington State winery.

His philosophy is pretty simple. Focus on what the vineyards have provided. Start with the highest quality fruit you can. Treat it vigorously when necessary, gently most of the time. Stay out of its way but watch it closely. Allow the wines to develop slowly, and make sure they provide exceptional pleasure.

The last few vintages made exclusively by Bob Betz…

Today, Betz Family Winery is headed by two families. Both are committed to heritage and continuing what the Betz winery embodies. That is, wines of dimension and pleasure. Wines that allow the character of Washington to shine through. They are a blend of the best elements of the new and the old worlds; full ripe fruit and yet structured for longevity.

Since their first vintage in 1997, Bob & Cathy Betz had a single minded goal of crafting compelling wines. wines that have individual character, are approachable and ageworthy, showcasing Washington as a distinguished wine region of the world. By carving out specific vineyard blocks and being meticulous in the vineyard and cellar we are able to achieve the quality we aspire to.
